The University of Idaho is a research, land-grant institution committed to undergraduate and graduate-research education with extension services responsive to Idaho and the region's business and community needs. The University is also responsible for regional medical and veterinary medical education programs in which the state of Idaho participates. ABE is a basic skills program for adults 16 years-of-age and older who are not currently enrolled in high school.  In addition, we serve adults who have graduated from high school and wish to brush up their reading, writing, or math skills so they can transition into college or the workforce.  All new students attend an orientation session that covers program expectations and provides assessments.

Each student's course of study is framed by an educational plan based on the unique needs of the student.  ABE offers structured classes at various levels of reading, writing, and math.  Our students have the option of online instruction as well.

ABE can help you:

  • Prepare for college.
  • Prepare for and pass the GED.
  • Become digitally literate.
  • Learn to speak English (for non-native learners).

Services Provided: The colleges that make up Boise State University offer the opportunity to pursue education in over 180 major fields of interest. The CATCH program - Charitable Assistance To Community's Homeless" in Boise and Caldwell- primarily assists homeless families with children younger than 18. The program is also available to young adults, ages 18 to 22, who are aging out of foster care.
**How CATCH program works? - The case manager will work with four shelters (Hope's Door, Lighthouse Rescue Mission, Salvation Army and Valley Crisis), as well as with WICAP, to receive referrals for families that meet the program qualifications. Once a family is determined to be eligible, that family will sign a lease directly with a landlord and CATCH of Canyon County will pay the rent, with funds donated by businesses, faith-based organizations, private individuals and stimulus dollars.

Services Provided: The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP): Federally run program that helps supplement the diets of low-income Americans by providing them with nutrition assistance at no cost. Participants can access these commodities once a month. Food is distributed to individuals from the Challis, Rexburg, and Salmon office to eligible clients. Interested clients will need to provide identification, proof of residency, and to complete an application with a declaration of income.

Energy Assistance: provides a one-time payment to a household's heat source utility company. The benefit is calculated to provide 2-3 months of heating costs for each eligible household.
